A Holistic Approach To Addiction Treatment

Addiction is a complex problem that has many contributing factors. The first bridge to cross would be to get clean which may involve a medical detox, and from then on the addict would need to stay away from addictive substances and activities.

This is not the end of the recovery process, it is not complete. In fact it has only just begun. Addiction is deep rooted and even though the addict may be physically clean from any addictive substances, the negative behavior of the addict and the “stinking thinking” is still very much present.

A Holistic Approach To Addiction Treatment

The Importance Of Holistic Addiction Treatment

Addiction treatment very much focuses on addressing making changes to the way that an addict thinks and behaves. This is done through individual counseling, group therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, 12 step meetings, religious counseling and/or SMART recovery meetings, as well as holistic addiction treatment. It is through this process that will help the addict achieve long term sobriety.

An addict needs to focus on the physical, spiritual and emotional aspects of recovery from addiction and not just one aspect. Taking a holistic approach to addiction treatment will give the addict a much better chance at long term recovery.

Here are some holistic addiction treatment methods that you can consider including in your recovery plan:

Massage for holistic addiction treatment

Massage

Massage therapy has incredible benefits and incorporating it into your treatment plan is highly recommended.

Being in active addiction is stressful and comes with many worries, feelings of guilt, anger and resentment. Deciding to go to rehab or joining a recovery group is scary and comes with a whole new set of concerns for an addict. Being in early recovery and working through your past and problems can be traumatic in itself.

Massage can help to relieve emotional stress and tension that has built up.

Detox is physically traumatic as well as emotional. Massage increases dopamine and serotonin (the feel good hormones) as well as improving circulation and removes metabolic waste from your system. This will not only help your body to detox faster but also to make the process of detox less painful and stressful.

Massage can also improve sleep which is something many addicts struggle with.

Touch may have invoke negative feelings for addicts. Including massage therapy can help to make touch have a positive association.Very often addicts may have a very emotional reaction to massage therapy which is perfectly normal.

Yoga addiction treatment holistic

Yoga

Yoga is more than just a form of exercise, it is a mindful process that teaches you how to connect your mind, body and breath. It is about self-awareness and focusing inward.

The benefits of yoga for addiction treatment include:

  • improved sleep
  • increase in energy levels
  • stress relief
  • increase in self-awareness and self-reflection
  • improved self-image and self-confidence
  • pain relief
  • reduced fatigue
  • increased physical strength and stamina
  • emotional healing

Yoga provides a healthier coping mechanism for addicts which can help to prevent relapse, reduce symptoms of withdrawals and cravings.

Meditation

Meditation can be done in many different ways such as alone or in a group, in silence or with music, your own meditation or a guided meditation.

Meditation has physical, mental and spiritual benefits which makes it an incredible tool for addiction treatment.

Physical benefits include decreased tension related pain,  lowered blood pressure, increased serotonin and increased energy levels.

Mental benefits include increased calmness, decreased stress and anxiety and improved emotional stability.

Spiritual benefits include increased creativity, open-mindedness and happiness.

Meditation will help you to create that feeling of oneness, of being in touch with your mind and your body.

Acupuncture holistic addiction treatment

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a key component of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It works on the belief that there are lines of energy running through the body which are called meridians. When there is any pain, discomfort or disease it is believe that these meridians are blocked. Acupuncture uses needles to remove the blockages and free the flow of energy.

The benefits of acupuncture for recovery are:

  • improved sleep
  • reduce in cravings
  • lessened withdrawals
  • decrease in anxiety
  • pain reduction
  • modulated emotions

Reiki holistic addiction treatment

Reiki

Reiki is a Japanese practice used for relaxation and stress relief. It is based on the belief that life energy flows through the body. If your life energy is low then you are more likely to get to get ill or feel stress. If your life energy is high you are more likely to happy, healthy and in harmony. Reiki practitioners make use of palm healing to transfer energy through their hands to benefit their patient.

Nutritional therapy for addiction treatmnt

Nutritional Therapy

The importance of good nutrition during the recovery process cannot be emphasized enough. Addicts make poor eating choices during active addiction and need to focus on eating properly when in treatment and in recovery.

Eating the right foods can make the detox and withdrawal process a little bit easier. Getting in the proper nutrition can also help your body to recover and repair itself after the use of drugs.

Part of recovery is learning healthy living habits and eating properly needs to be high on this list of healthy habits.

Getting in the right vitamins and minerals will have a positive impact on your mental well-being. Good nutrition means stable blood sugar, which in turn will help to keep your moods stable.

These are just some of the types of holistic treatments available for addiction treatment. They key to holistic treatments is that they aim to treat the person as a whole, not just one single element of the symptoms. The same should be said of an addiction treatment plan, just treating the behavioral aspect of addiction is often not going to be adequate.

The best possible approach is to team up holistic treatments with traditional addiction treatment.

The goal is to treat all the underlying issues that an addict is faced with, which will result in changed behaviors, improved physical and emotional health, as well as a spiritual awakening.

How to Be Happy in This Moment

Something that has eluded me for most of my life has been true happiness. There were moments as a child I remember being happy and content, but in all honesty there has always been a black hole in my life, a void. It has been there for as long as I can remember and I have been trying to fill it, unsuccessfully, for most of my life.

So while there have been a good few moments of happiness throughout my life I cannot remember any long stretch of time where I have felt whole, satisfied with my life and happy. Well not until recently anyway.

How to be happy pin

I’ll be Happy WHEN…

I think the one of the biggest things to blame is my way of thinking. I have always been in the pursuit of happiness and while I cannot remember any extended moments of happiness I can remember lots of things that I believed would bring that longed for feeling of joy.

This belief was that as soon as I have achieved a specific goal in life with it would be a sense of accomplishment, of joy and happiness.

There are so many examples of this and here are a few of these:

  • When I turn 18 I will be happy
  • When I get my own place to live and I am independent I will be happy
  • When I have more money I will be happy
  • When I get my first job I will be happy
  • When I get another job I will be happy
  • When I get a raise I will be happy
  • When I fall in love I will be happy
  • When I can get out of this toxic relationship I will be happy
  • When I turn 21 I will be happy
  • When I stop drinking and using drugs I will be happy
  • When I reach my 1 year clean milestone I will be happy
  • When I have a baby I will be happy
  • When I give up smoking cigarettes I will be happy

The fact is that I achieved all of those goals and not one of those within itself made me happy.

In fact some of these things that I wanted in life made me more unhappy when I achieved them and I couldn’t quite get my head around this fact.

When I reached my 1 year clean milestone I truly believed it would bring with it some incredible spiritual awakening and a profound sense of happiness and satisfaction. I remember being all worked up with excitement, I had reached the one year clean that everyone so looks up to. I went down to the local Narcotics Anonymous meeting with my cakes and candles. I gave my one year share and I got my one year clean NA keyring.

Afterwards a few people gathered at the coffee shop down the road and we had a grand time for about an hour. Then people started to leave and it started to hit me. I am the same person I was yesterday and absolutely nothing has changed except that I have this silly keyring.

The truth is that I felt really cheated and unhappy with a sense of is this it? Is this all there is to life, just carry on with your recovery, carry on with the 12 steps and there is nothing more to life? No more drinking, no more using, no more wild parties?

It is interesting to note that a lot of addicts and alcoholics relapse around the 1 year sober milestone and quite frankly I am not surprised, I personally found it a very disappointing experience that didn’t come close to my huge expectations of it.

When I gave birth to my first child I suffered from postnatal depression for about 6 months without realizing it and I slipped into deep despair. I couldn’t understand why I was so unhappy and miserable when this was supposed to be the happiest time of my life. I was three years clean, I had just had a baby and I was married to the man I loved, I should be happy right?

So over time it has become clear to me that nothing will magically bring me true happiness the moment I achieve it.

What is Standing in the Way of Happiness?

The biggest thing standing in the way of happiness is ourselves. The way we think and the psychological attachments that we have.

We so often have negative beliefs about ourselves. Perhaps we self-sabotage ourselves before we even achieve anything, or we speak negatively to ourselves and often we try to fill this void in destructive ways.

In my case I tried to make myself feel better through drinking alcohol and using drugs, and as you can tell from my website this didn’t exactly work out well for me.

How to be happy in this moment - letting go of psychological attachements

How to be Happy in This Moment

I have been finding true happiness in the last few years and the place that I find it is right in this moment. It is not some goal that needs to be attained. Each moment can be a moment of happiness. Happiness happens right now and it is essential to remember that.

Happiness happens right now

If you are sitting and seething with resentment about something that happened yesterday or if you are attaching happiness to an event in the future you are missing this very moment in the here and now.

Always remember that happiness happens right now, so focus on this moment to be happy.

Think of how a young child reacts to their environment, for example when it is snowing outside and how they look around them taking it all in. Take a moment to always appreciate nature and your surroundings.

My kids even get excited when it rains. They shriek with excitement and go watch at the window. I have to agree with them watching the rain is awesome, it is good for the soul.

Psychological attachments

It is also about teaching yourself that you are worth it, that you deserve happiness and this is where you need to be able to identify these negative psychological attachments and start to replace them with positive affirmations so that you have a choice.

In this way you can choose to be happy.

Gratitude helps achieve happiness

Something that has worked incredibly well for me if I start to feel resentful or unhappy about my life is to write a gratitude list. I take out a piece of paper and I write down everything that I am grateful for right now.

When I do this and see how much I really have in life, and how far I have come in the last 8 years since I got clean I get a much clearer perspective of how fortunate I am.

Joy is found in the simplest things

The things that make me the happiest are the simplest things that happen all day every day. The way my children laugh, the funny things they say and the laughs I have with my husband.

It is not the house I want to build one day that will make me happy, but the little moments in getting to that achievement and one day when I do get to build my own house it will be the memories I create inside that house that will make me happy, not the bricks that make up the house.

It is up to me one day to make it a home, a happy home.

Being Happy is a Choice

For me being happy is a choice. I choose to be grateful and I choose to keep myself focused on the present moment and enjoy it to the fullest.

Of course I have also seen some people giving advice to others to “just be happy” and to “stop moping around”. It is not quite as simple as this and if you are depressed and feel like there is no joy in life you can still choose to change things by getting some help.

There is absolutely no shame in getting help to get your life back on track and to finding true happiness, in fact I highly recommend it!

What have your struggles been while trying to find happiness? Do you have any tips or experiences to share?

Fuck It: The Ultimate Spiritual Way

Unless you have heard of the book you probably think the title of my post is a little odd. Before I tell you about this book I would like to tell you how I came across it.

If you read my first post after I quit smoking you will see that I spoke about screaming Fuck It every now and then for no reason. I don’t know why I did this, it just sort of happened. The Fuck It just came out of me all on its own. The strange this is that this really helped me get through those first few days. It just released the craving a little bit for me.

Yes sometimes you just have to say Fuck It!

On hearing about my strange behaviour my sister assumed I had been practicing the Fuck It way… I said I’m sorry, what? Surely this must be a sign from my Higher Power that I need to know about this?

Anyway long story short the next time my sister came over she brought me her Fuck It book, written by John C. Parkin.

fuck it way

Here is my video review if you don’t feel like reading today.

What is Fuck It: The Ultimate Spiritual Way about?

John C Parkin explains how we attach way too much meaning to things. We care too much about everything and when it comes down to it these things don’t really matter much now do they? If we let go of these attachments (and say Fuck It of course) we will experience freedom and more happiness.

If you don’t understand then let me explain it to you like this. We place importance on our job, on being on time for things, on not letting people down, on our weight, on what people think of us, on everything in our lives right? Then we are in a car accident and nearly lose our life… how much do all those little things matter now? We might have lost a lot of those things that mattered so much before, like our job for example… but we have our life so it now seems really small doesn’t it. Perhaps you didn’t even like you job in the first place, yet you place so much emphasis on it anyway.

The Fuck It way teaches you how to live in the moment, how to enjoy the now and how to say Fuck It when things in your life are not what you want. Fuck It and change it, or Fuck It and accept it, but to stop making it a problem in your life.

What I Liked about the Fuck It Way

The thing I liked the most is the great humor. Ok I agree if might not be everyone’s cup of tea and I must admit that nearly everyone that knows me thinks I have a rather peculiar sense of humor.

Here is an a excerpt from the book, one of the ways to read the book:

Another great way to read this book is to read a section, then go out and tell people how much you are enjoying it and how your life is changing by the minute. In this way you benefit yourself (good karma for spreading the word), others (who benefit from the message) and me (who’s using all the proceeds from this book to build a house made of chocolate that I will slowly eat my way through, then claim the full amount on insurance, saying it was termites, and start the whole damn thing again).

I just loved that. I also loved the fact that I started laughing out loud and my spirit felt lighter, something that happened a lot throughout this book. Not only does John C Parkin teach you some great ways to relax, de-stress, make changes (or accept things) in your life but he does it in a fun and hilarious way.

He teaches a number of simple techniques to live your life the Fuck It way and shows various techniques for meditation, which is referred to the Fuck It Form. The first few Fuck It Forms are started in the basic sofa posture, where you slump on the couch like you’re watching tv. I think this is just great, especially because I tried it out and it actually works.

What I Disliked about the Fuck It Way

The only thing I disliked is the book was too short. I loved this book and I wanted more! I will have to read Fuck It Therapy: The Profane with to Profound Happiness to get my fix.

Who is this for?

This book is for everyone and anyone, whether you think you have room for improvement in your life of not. I honestly believe this will benefit everyone. Of course anyone that has a problem with profanity and find offence when people swear might just want to give this book a miss, but chances are when you saw the title of my post you left my website very quickly.

Another word of warning, there are parts of in the book that are quite blasphemous. If you are religious and take offence easily then this might not be for you. I don’t believe he intended to offend but I can certainly see how people might be upset! On that note it is interesting to see that John C Parkin’s parents were Anglican preachers.

What did this book do for me personally?

For starters it has made my heart lighter. I had so many laughs and giggles just reading the book that I think that made me a happier person. It feels good to laugh, it feels good to be happy.

I’ve applied the Fuck It Way to my life in a few ways already:

  • Before I even read the book I said Fuck It to smoking and it helped!
  • Wednesday last week was scorching hot. I said Fuck It to working, I went to the shop and bought 2 boogie boards and then picked my kids up from school early and we went to the beach.
  • I said Fuck It to my fears and insecurities and recorded a video for Youtube, yes for this post.

How has the Fuck It Way helped me:

  • I am a non smoker!
  • I am more relaxed
  • I feel lighter, more free than ever before
  • My kids thought I was the best mom ever and had a lovely afternoon playing at the beach
  • I played at the beach instead of being a moaning mom, I had fun
  • I have laughed more in the last 2 weeks then I have in a very long time
  • I have a Youtube video! YAY I have been wanting to do this for ages but I have been too scared.

Do I recommend Fuck It: The Ultimate Spiritual Way?

Fuck yes, I do! Do yourself a favor and get this book. This is one spiritual self help book that I really do believe can change your life for the better.

FYI John C Parkin and his wife Gaia have also founded a holistic centre called The Hill That Breathes in Italy. They hold regular Fuck It Weeks where they teach the Fuck It Way. I personally would love to be able to go one day.
